The ground was still wet with frost and dew, and as Alice led Jaeger over the expanse of dampness, the stallion seemed to lift his legs up high in order to avoid getting wet.
"You're such a princess," she told the big horse, but he wholeheartedly ignored her; his large, dark brown eyes were fixed on the track ahead.
Alice was a new rider in a new town, transferred from a nothing-and-nowhere town back west, and after being hired by an up-and-coming training stable on the outskirts of this town, she'd met this lovely fellow, Les Mizerables. He was anything but miserable to be honest, and right then all he wanted to do, it seemed, was get on the track and burn it up.
Alice nimbly swung up, having practiced countless times in the past, and directed Jaeger towards the track, where several other horses were currently being worked. Paying them no mind, Jaeger started off at a powerful, easy canter, muscles rippling under his tack.
Alice loved this horse, and everything about him. His regal attitude and calm disposition, coupled with his amazing insatiable thirst to win, meant that even though he was a late starter, he would undoubtedly do well in his third race. As a preview of what was to come, when Alice gave him his head, he shot off across the dirt, not a single sound of exertion escaping him. His acceleration was effortless, hooves pounding the earth as he raced towards the finish line. Without any encouragement from Alice, he turned it up a notch on the final stretch and shot past the line with even more power than she'd expected.
Coming down easily to a trot, Alice wondered briefly if his easy-going nature would ever get in the way of a win for Jaeger. It'd worried her from the beginning, but there was only one way to find out.
Turning him off the track, she headed towards the stables, praising the stallion for a job well done.
